world tb day 2023

24 March 2023

WORLD TB DAY, 24 March, commemorates the announcement in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch discovered the Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacilli that causes tuberculosis (TB). This date is an opportunity to highlight research on TB prevention and control and educate the public about the worldwide impact of TB. In 2021, an estimated 10.6 million people fell ill with tuberculosis (TB) worldwide. Six million men, 3.4 million women and 1.2 million children – progress against TB was lost during the Covid-19 epidemic, with TB control worsening in many countries impact by Covid-19 (WHO, Oct 2022). TB is present in all countries and age groups. But TB is curable and preventable.

On this occasion we announce the ongoing efforts of the TB Regional Prospective Observational Research Tuberculosis (TB-RePORT) Consortium, supported by the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and bilateral funding from host countries – some supported since 2013. This consortium across 8 countries (Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, S Africa, S Korea and Uganda), representing approximately 70% of the world’s TB epidemic, establishes a platform for future combined or comparative studies between bench science and clinical research that has been highly productive in national and international research aims helping with control and prevention.

Rutgers University is the ongoing Coordinating Center for this Consortium, having this central coordination effort since 2020, now ongoing till 2028. Please visit reportinternational.org for detailed information about these ongoing efforts to better control and eradicate tuberculosis worldwide.
