Dr. Zar, Professor & Chair, Dept. of Paediatrics & Child Health, and Director MRC Unit on Child & Adolescent Health (UCT), has had a strong research focus on childhood TB, including improved and novel strategies for diagnosis, and studies of preventive strategies including among HIV-infected children. Dr. Zar is affiliated to the UCT Lung Institute (UCTLI) and Red Cross Children’s Hospital; and leads a unique African birth cohort study, the Drakenstein Child Health Study, which includes HIV-exposed and -unexposed infants, to investigate the early determinants of child health. Dr. Zar is a previous RePORT investigator and, with Dr. Hatherill, has a successful collaboration with Dr. Cangelosi to develop oral swab PCR as a TB triage test in adult and pediatric populations. Dr. Zar will lead clinical and laboratory activities in development and validation of diagnostic and treatment response biomarkers of childhood TB (Pediatric TB Work Package).
