Dr. Walzl, Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Sciences; Executive Head, Department of Biomedical Sciences; Head, Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics; and Director, Stellenbosch University Immunology Research Group (SUN-IRG), is a clinician scientist, trained in internal medicine, pulmonology and immunology. Dr. Walzl’s research focuses on the immunology of Mtb infection and host biomarkers, including diagnostic markers, markers of TB treatment response and markers of protective immunity against Mtb. He and Drs. Hatherill and Scriba have collaborated for > 10 years on large cohort studies including CORTIS, GC6, PREDICT and RePORT SA1. In this proposal his role will be to support the Project Core and provide leadership and clinical biomarker expertise for development of new diagnostic tools (Diagnostic Biomarker Work Package)
